Following a request from TMD Friction, ETA2U has developed a project for the increase of the mobility of virtual machines. The chosen technical solution was Veeam Backup & Replication for the migration of several critical services between the production center and the Disaster Recovery center. The solution implementation process has taken place without impacting the users and has enabled TMD Friction both to ensure operation continuity and data replication in order to obtain a high level of availability for IT critical services.
For the Disaster Recovery center, an IT infrastructure IT consisting of HP Gen 8 servers, Cisco communication equipment, VMware ESXi 5.5 virtualization software, Veeam Backup & Replication v7 backup software with advanced compression functions
and of elimination of duplicated items, incremental backup solutions was selected. This ensures backup’s based on images of virtual machines that allow fast and flexible recovery of an entire virtual machine, of a file or of an application element.
The implementation itself and entry into operation have taken place in November 2013. In this project, a virtualized infrastructure was created, able to accommodate the required critical services in accordance with the plan of operational continuity within the Disaster Recovery center.
The migration plan included the following stages:
- Deployment of VMware Essentials ESXi 5.5
- Installation of the backup server and autoloader in the secondary datacenter
- Installation of Veeam Backup and Replication and configuration of the replication jobs between the main ESXi hosts and those from the Disaster Recovery center
- Installation of Symantec Backup Exec and configuration of the jobs for tape backup
Migration was performed without any incident. The main element into the deployment of the project was the replication of critical virtual machines between the production center and the Disaster Recovery center.
